Big Looks for Fall
Everywhere you look - magazine ads, TV, celebrities! The big look for fall & winter is the big Amber and huge Turquiose pendants. We see styles with gemstone bead necklaces and the black cord, each very popular choices, along with the nugget style turquoise bracelet.
Turquoise has been an amulet favorite since before the time of the Pharaohs, believed to counter violence, and accidental death, enhances courage, and therefore was used to decorate battle instruments in early times.
It is the Birthstone for Saturday, and also for the birth hour of 5am to 5:59am. See some great buys -Turquoise

Amber was the first object used as an amulet against poisoning and attracts compassion and understanding. Because of improved trade and escavation techniques, today it is more readily available and more affordable than in earlier centuries, where it was so highly esteemed that it was virtually only available to the very elite of society. Take a look at some of our beautiful Amber. Click here- Amber

September Sapphire
One of the top selling gems of all time is Sapphire. It has a hardness value of 9, making it one of the most durable. The variety of color in Sapphire is a real bonus for the September born. Each element in it's makeup determines what color the stone has become. Choices available are Yellow, Pink, Blue in many shades, Colorless, Green and a beauty that is quite rare, Padparadscha, an orangey yellow-pink stone. In Sapphire lore, it symbolizes truth, loyalty & justice, and transmits peace and humility. It is the birthstone for the month of September and for those born on Thursaday. Also for those born on any day in the 10am to 10:59am.hour. It was worn as an amulet against plague and pestilence, and the "evil eye". Evil spirits were pleased with the sight of rare and beautiful gems and by wearing them, made the attacks less deadly. It is also known as the "Brow Chakkra" or the "third eye". It enhances precognition and the ability to develope psychic abilities through meditation. If your preferances lean toward the Blue Sapphire, the depth of color and tone have varying vibratory influences. Sky Blue takes inspiration from the sky & sea, seeking higher & deeper thoughts. May provoke noble causes of the unselfish persons. Navy Blue denotes strength and reliability. Indigo or "Midnight" to almost black Sapphire tends to invoke morbid or selfish influences. Moodiness may play it's influence on the wearer. Check your Zodiac Gemstone for September Click Here

Clean Your Silver!
If I only knew about this many years earlier! I once threw away a tangle of badly tarnished silver, textured Herringbone chains. They were impossible to me of little patience, to clean! Here's a great way to clean ALL your silver (except gemstone jewelry and jewelry that has been antiqued.). In a deep basin or glass bowl fill hot water (very hot but not scalding), add equal amounts of table salt and powdered water softener (available where you purchase laundry detergent). 2-3 tablespoons of each should suffice for 1 gallon or so of water. Swoosh around water to disolve salts, using a non metalic spoon. Submerge in the mixture enough aluminum foil to cover bottom of container. Place items to be cleaned on top of foil, making sure item is submerged. If item is too big to fully submerge, rotate after soaking for 15 seconds. After a 15-30 second soak, remove from liquid, rinse under running water then dry and buff with a soft cloth. If tarnish is very stubborn, repeat process. Works best when water is very hot.

Personal Thank You
I wanted to send out a personal thank you! to one of you who may have suggested the listing of LiaFail...Stone of Destiny to the joeant.com search engine. I appreciate any efforts that will give LiaFail more exposure and bring more friends like you to a place where "all things wonderous " reside. However, we received notice that LiaFail was "unsuitable" because of "difficult" navigation and computer crashes. I've never heard of this problem from any of you, and hope that this is not something you have encountered at LiaFail. To help with any navigation confusion, we've added to the larger pages a search feature, which will search the page for any one word and take you to the item. So if you're looking for a ring, you'll need to be specific, such as "Onyx", it'll take you to the first item with an onyx in it's description. It's not the most complete search, but will help until we find a better one. I'd be interested to hear of any problems, such as the ones discussed earlier, so please email me at georgia@liafail.org if you've had similar problems with the site.

December Birthstones
It'll be here before you know it, and the variety of birthstones for December seems to be growing. The traditional birthstone is Zircon - not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia, Zircon is a genuine gemstone of very high refraction. In nature, it is a red-brown or gray-brown. The process of heating the stones thousands of degrees, turns this commonly ugly stone into the beautiful blue or white (clear) Zircon that has been a substitute for Diamond for centuries. The rare Red Zircon is untreated and very prized.
Zircon is the stone of luck. All things good surround this very positive stone. It's influence possesses the wearer of happiness & strength, promotes sound sleep and grants all desires for health, prosperity and accolades. It protects the wearer from all dangers on land, sea and air. If this is also your birthstone, it's attributes are intensified.
A great alternate birthstone for December is Turquoise. Not only being the top new look for the Fall season, the belief in it's attributes vary by culture, from ancient Persia to our Native American Indian. Some believe it to protect the wearer against any type of violence and was therefore found in ancient Mayan jewelry and war implements. Also known as the symbol of youth and innocent love, and a great stimulus of deep friendship.
A very new December stone has become very popular - Tanzanite. It is becoming a rare stone in deep blue variety but has fully earned it's new designation. Being a very new stone in the realm of the ancients in its company, it is not hard to see why this beautiful blue stone with the red flash has become so much in demand. (We'll cover this stone in more detail later.)

Since You Asked...
**************
Question: "What's the difference between a "casting" and a "semi-mount"? Answer: They are the gold or sterling piece in which the gemstones are set to make jewelry. The "semi-mount" is a casting which when purchased, has accent stones already set in it, leaving the main center area either without a head (pronged stone mounting), or ready to set the stone of your choice. A popular style today is the "Chanel- setting".
A casting has no pre-set accent stones and is usually a decorative piece for a solitare stone.
Question: "How can I tell if I have a real Pearl"? Answer: One way, besides the obvious signs of peeling of the luster, is to lightly rub it across your front teeth. It should have a slightly gritty feel. This isn't always a certainty, so if you are still in doubt the Pearl will have a pitted look under a loupe of 10x magnification. A jeweler can easily confirm your suspitions.

December 1, 2002   Newsletter of all things "wonderous"!
Holiday Greetings!
Sure hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Having family & friends is something to truly be thankful for, and here in the U.S., traditionally, it means a great turkey dinner and pumpkin pie! Since the events of 9-11, we realize just how dear we hold our family & friends, and to give thanks for having them and other blessings seems proper.

Speaking of Holidays, the count-down is on! We are now into the Chanuka season and Christmas is right around the corner. Winter is officially here on the 21st of December and the malls and shopping centers are getting crowded. There's no time to be wasted, no more procrastination. Packages to be mailed should be ready to go this week. So, due to the "mad Rush" we're all in these days, we'll get right to the "news".

Egyptian Perfume Bottles

We just got in some beautiful Egyptian Perfume Bottles! Most are between 3 & 4 inches tall and all have gold accents. Hand-blown designs are in Red, Green, Clear, and Blue. Lapis for December
Lapis was used in prehistoric times for jewelry and in the middle ages it was used also for inlay decoration on vases, pillars & Posts and other artistries. It is said that Cleopatra used it ground into a fine powder for eye make up, and the pigment used to color various articles.
Lapis symbolizes love & tenderness and sympathy. It was once used as the birthstone for December. It's best attribute is it gives it's owner the power to transmit love to another person.
The glitter that makes the Lapis so prized is fine pyrite inclusions. The more evenly distributed over the surface of the stone, the better. However, too much pyrite can make the stone appear a dull greenish tint. The sulphur in Lapis is what creates the blue color. Because of it's numerous other minerals and materials, it is considered a rock, rather than a mineral in itself.
Lapis is sensitive to high temperatures and strong pressure, and rings should be removed before any type of labor or household chores.
Note: German Lapis, also called Swiss Lapis is actually dyed Jasper. It has no pyrite inclusions and is easy to spot as a Lapis imposter.

Lay-Away and Payments

We're trying to make the more expensive items in our collection available to anyone who wants them, without having to pay the entire amount in one payment. On most items that are priced over $100.00 we're making available a payment plan. This like a lay-away plan. It holds that item for you, make a monthy payment (usually only 2or 3 payments) and the item is yours. We've added the payment button on most of the higher priced items, but if there is an item that you would still like on a payment plan, we can do that for you too. *************

February 1, 2003   Newsletter of all things "wonderous"!
Our Deepest Condolences....
We as Americans, with so many successful flights of the Columbia and other space shuttles, might have forgotten or not realized the volitile and thin thread between success and failure of space exploration. We have been brutally reminded that each and every lift-off of our shuttles are potentionally disasterous. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of these individuals who courageously gave their lives in the persuit of knowledge. Our sincerest regrets at your deep sorrow.

"Eyes"...the fun is gone!
The "Eyes" contest has been very successful since we first brought it into the site back in September 2002. It was meant to be a fun little diversion for our visitors as the prizes are only incidentals, and we enjoy giving away stuff to those who come to the site, look around, and follow the rules of entering the contest. It has come to our attention that last month, and maybe even in previous months, the challenge was taken away from some individuals by having the page of where the "eyes" can be found published on a "contest site" out of Australia. This is not only unfair to those who come in and follow all the rules to enter, but I feel that anyone who had entered the contest in this manner, and won, is taking advantage of our generousity and good will. I am hoping that it will not occur again. Because it is getting more and more expensive to ship items, especially to countries outside the U.S., we may have to alter the entry requirements which we don't want to do, because of a few individuals.

Love is in the air!
***************

All signs of a lover's holiday, weddings and engagements are abundant on the day named for St. Valentine. It's the perfect time to renew vows or make new ones with the one you love. We celebrate the day by sending Valentine's Day greeting cards, or giving gifts of candy or roses. Some very romantic souls give gifts that last a life time. A permanant reminder of the expression of love. The most popular of these gifts are jewelry. Hearts in all sizes, lockets, and other engraveable items are favorites. Anytime the gift of a heart pendant or locket is given, it's meaning is unmistakeable. See some great Hearts here:
Show Me Great Some Hearts

Is it Black Onyx?
The black stone, especially when set in white gold or sterling silver is quite stunning, and has re-emerged more popular than ever! Onyx, being in the quartz family is in the 6 1/2 to 7 range of hardness and is quite suitable for rings. When speaking about Black Onyx, it is actually in the Chalcedony family of quartz, so it should be called Black Chalcedony. There is a true Black Onyx known as Arabic Onyx, which is cut from the layers in Agate, which usually is layered in whites and browns.

What about Jet? Jet is a gem quite different from Onyx, and one must be careful to not use Jet when referring to Black Onyx. They are quite different.

Jet is another black gem that was used in the last few centuries in Mourning jewelry, rosaries, brooches and other items. It is quite soft, only 2 1/2 - 4 in hardness, and should not be used in rings. It can be scratched with a copper penny, or in softer Jets, even a fingernail! It is actually a type of Charcoal that can be cut with a lathe and polished, and is very nice in some items, but it is what it is, and should not be considered as a gem you would want to set in a ring or any piece that takes hard wear.

Another common stone in the Tourmaline family which passes as Jet or Onyx, is a stone called Schorl, with a hardness of 7-7 1/2.

As long as you love your jewelry and take good care of it, it shouldn't matter of what material it is made, but it does cause one to stop and think about it when purchasing new jewelry.
**************
Spirals
**************

The ancient Spiral symbol, a swirl of a coiled circle pattern, has it's roots in a time before the written word in Celtic society. In many of the Celtic countries (and some not so Celtic) are found these strange signs of ancient civilization. Found most often in burial mounds and sacred caves, the meaning of the symbol is mainly conjecture.

Some have likened it to the sun, as a ritual or religious symbol in a time when the ancients were still practicing paganism. During that time it was believed that all things in nature were ruled by, or were in themselves, gods - the trees, the earth, each wind (North, South, East or West) had a god who goverened it. Many believe the Spiral is the symbol for life and the life cycle. In early times the true meaning was passed down from generation to generation, and facts (the true meanings) began to fuse with legend. It has been said that the Spiral is the interpretation by the people of the time, to be the universe, it's spinning cycles and seasons. Many believe these Spirals to hold mystical meanings and powers and that the Spiral was a blessing or a "seal" for the one who has passed, to prevent evil from entering a sacred place - such as a tomb.

The people who made up the Celtic tribes were nomadic, so many artifacts including the Spiral have been found in far reaching areas, not usually associated with the Celts.

The fluid, serene lines of the Spiral can be viewed as a gentle whirlwind pattern, or a dizzying symbol of madness and confusion. It is said, that even today, one could enter a cave with Spiral decorated walls, and if left in solitude for any length of time, will begin to go into a dream state or halucinate, and if prone to them, have epilectic seizures.

Good News!

There's great news - especially if
you're like me! For some reason, when typing in an address to my web browser, I automatically type in .com . It doesn't matter if the end of the address is .net or .org, etc. My mind-set is usually going to have me type in .com. This can be disasterous if you're looking for a site with anything other than .com, you never get to where you want to go, without more time consuming rigamarole. For LiaFail... .org is the furthest thing from mind and I'm sure that others feel the same! So, we've been lucky to have acquired the .net address, and we hope to eventually to faze out the .org on our web address (URL). So, at present, whether you enter www.liafail.org ~ or ~ www.liafail.net, it will take you to our front page. This is great news for us and the future of LiaFail.... I'm hoping that you have us already saved in bookmarks or favorites, but if not, this new change might make things easier for some of us. ******

Whichever pages are of keenest interest to you can be updated or changed, and if you do not vistit LiaFail on a regular basis, how will you know there is a change? NEWS FROM Tucson Gem and Jewelry Show
(This article is being repeated for new subscribers)
The TUCSON Gem and Jewelry trade show has ended and, it's not surprising that prices have increased substantially! We all know that gold prices are very high, and we expected the precious gems such as Sapphire, and Ruby to increase in price, along with Tanzanite. What was a total shock was the over-all price increase on all gems, including cabochons! One of the biggest suprizes was how much Topaz has jumped! Now that white Topaz is being treated to produce a variety of different colors and the newest being the Bi-Color, which appears to simulate Bi-color Tourmaline or Watermelon Tourmaline, and Ametrine, the Topaz rough has been snapped up, and what is left has gotten pretty expensive, considering that Topaz has always been one of the most affordable semi-precious gems. In a wholesale venue, it is common to see buyers buy in bulk and therefore get a better price than if one were to purchase individual gemstones. What was totally mind blowing was the price for gemstone BEADS! Because of the variety of beads, and speaking only in reference to genuine gemstone beads, prices have gone through the roof! The variety is outstanding this year, especially in the fancy carved beads. Instead of pricing these by the strand ( temporarily pre-strung), they are priced by the carat, so depending on the type, size and weight of the beads on a strand, the price would be more than what we are used to seeing. This will lead to finished bead jewelry being in the higher price range at retail as well. Should the gold market go down and thus a change in economy, we would expect to see the gem market to follow suit. This is not necessarily the case, especially in precious stones and those gems considered to be rare and exotic. This is because gems are not bought and sold on the stock market, as is gold, and the price of gems can be whatever the buyer is willing to pay.
Gemstones that have become good investments are the ones that are in demand, scarce, and of good to better quality, and if you were among those who have purchased gems in as little as six months ago, you have seen your gemstones increase in value at least three fold. To really appreciate the gems that you own in your collection, try to attend a trade show in your area. This will open your eyes to what is happening in the gem trade, and also allow you to compare the prices of comparable stones. You'll be amazed at the knowledge you will aquire. A dealers license is not always required to attend, but any resale license will admit you to "to the trade" shows.
We were unable to aquire many gems that we were looking for to add to the site, so this was a disappointment. What little we did aquire will be added to the gem page shortly. To keep up with the new items, sign up for the Change Alarm notice, which will notify you the minute the new items are published.
March Birsthstone- Aquamarine Lore
Aquamarine through the ages has thought to confer dignity, be symbolic of charity and purity, improve memory, impart wealth, protect against dangers and illness while at sea, avert ambushes, cure shortness of breath, and many other advantages. it also became an appropriate morning gift from a bridegroom to his bride on the day after their wedding. If held in the mouth it enables one to call upon any elemental power and receive satisfaction for any question asked.

Clue:

One day when I
was sorting gems,
my tweezer slipped
and popped into my hem,
a stone so small
I could not see
so down I went
on bended knee.

Hi and lo I looked
and seek'd
but nary a stone
could I peek
It has to be here,
this I knew,
but maybe I
should check my shoe!

I've heard of gems
that pop and hop
but just how far?
would it ever stop?

Am I nuts
or maybe blind?
Was it ever here?
if it was,
what kind?

I'm getting old
this I'm told,
but popping gems
that need their gold,
is not the way
to end a day
and dream of
gemstones
running away!
